Balrampur Chini Plans Capex for Bioplastic Plant

Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) unveiled a forward integration initiative worth ₹2,000 crore, marking a significant milestone as India’s pioneer industrial bioplastic plant project. The strategic move underscores BCML’s commitment to advancing sustainability objectives within the nation. With a focus on achieving net zero emissions by 2070, BCML plans to invest ₹2,000 crore gradually over the next thirty months. The project will culminate in the establishment of India’s inaugural industrial bioplastic plant.

The upcoming polylactic acid (PLA) manufacturing venture, slated for completion within the stipulated thirty month timeframe, will be capable of producing 75,000 tons per annum (tpa) of PLA. Situated adjacent to an existing sugar plant on a greenfield site, the project capitalizes on the existing local infrastructure, leveraging sugar as a primary raw material for PLA production.

BCML’s extensive portfolio, which includes ownership of ten sugar mills exclusively located in Uttar Pradesh, facilitates the efficient utilization of sugar for PLA manufacturing.

As reported by PROJECTS TODAY, BCML’s strategic investment in Konkan Speciality Polyproducts (Konspec), an established player in specialty polymers, biopolymers, intermediaries, and chemicals, has paved the way for this ambitious venture. The adoption of PLA and PLA compounds holds promise for the potential replacement of single-use plastics (SUP) across various applications, signaling a transformative shift towards sustainability.
