BASF and Braven Drive Sustainability with Advanced Recycling

BASF Corporation has signed a supply agreement with Braven Environmental, a player in advanced recycling, to incorporate Braven PyChem® into its operations. This ISCC PLUS-certified recycled feedstock, derived from mixed plastic waste, will partially replace fossil resources at the BASF TotalEnergies Petrochemical (BTP) facility in Port Arthur, Texas. Under the agreement, Braven will supply BASF from its upcoming multi-unit facility in Texarkana, Texas.

Braven PyChem®: A Sustainable Alternative

Braven produces PyChem® using its proprietary pyrolysis technology, which converts plastic waste into valuable raw materials. By diverting plastic waste from landfills and incineration, Braven’s process helps reduce environmental impact while supporting circular economy initiatives.

ChemCycling®: Turning Waste into High-Quality Products

As per the BASF press release, BASF will integrate Braven PyChem® into its ChemCycling® process, which replaces a portion of fossil-based raw materials with recycled feedstock. Using a third-party audited mass balance approach, BASF attributes the recycled content to specific products, which then receive the “Ccycled®” designation. These Ccycled® products offer identical properties to conventional plastic materials. This allows customers to process and use them in demanding applications such as automotive and construction.

Driving Circularity Through Collaboration

Christoph Gahn, Vice President, Circularity and Sustainable Raw Materials Petrochemicals at BASF emphasized, “Solving the challenge of plastic waste and creating a more circular economy requires innovation and collaboration across the value chain. This offtake agreement with Braven is an important step toward commercializing our Ccycled® portfolio in North America. By using recycled feedstock in a mass balance approach, we can save fossil resources. By choosing Ccycled® products, BASF customers help enable plastics circularity”.

Through this collaboration, BASF and Braven are making a significant impact. They are reducing plastic waste, conserving fossil resources, and advancing the circular economy in North America.
