BASF Boosts R&D in Copper Hydromet and Flotation

In response to the rising global demand for copper and the pressing need for sustainable, resource-efficient processing, BASF is making a strategic shift in its copper hydrometallurgy operations. Building on the success of its LixTRA™ product line, the company is accelerating efforts to develop the next generation of high-efficiency leaching aids. To enhance its capabilities, BASF is integrating its leaching research into its broader surfactant innovation platform. This strategic alignment will drive synergies across technologies and lead to faster, more impactful developments.

R&D Consolidation in Houston to Boost Collaboration

As part of this shift, BASF is relocating its Global R&D leaching operations from Tucson, Arizona, to its cutting-edge R&D facility in Houston, Texas. This consolidation aims to bring multidisciplinary teams together, encouraging deeper collaboration and the cross-pollination of ideas. Caren Hoffmann, Vice President Mining Solutions at BASF, said, “This synergy is poised to drive innovative solutions. These solutions could reshape the landscape of our industry.”

Localized Support for Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning

BASF is also decentralizing its technical and analytical services for solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) to be closer to its customers. This customer-first approach ensures faster, more responsive support for users of LIX® and LixMS™ products. Tailored technical services and localized analytical capabilities will deliver added value and operational efficiency to mining clients worldwide.

Advancing Flotation Technologies

In parallel, BASF remains deeply committed to innovation in both sulfidic and non-sulfidic flotation. Through its flagship brands—Lupromin®, Luprofroth®, and Luproset®—BASF is formulating next-generation chemistries that significantly enhance mineral recovery and processing performance. Hendrik Sporys, Head of Global Marketing, said, “We harness extensive expertise and utilize our leading-edge laboratories. This helps us develop tailored solutions that address our customers’ challenges.”

Positioned for the Future of Mining

These strategic moves reinforce BASF Mining Solutions’ dedication to delivering sustainable, high-performance chemical technologies. These technologies are designed to meet the evolving demands of the global mining sector. The press release states that BASF unites innovation, technical excellence, and customer proximity. This approach better positions the company to shape the future of copper processing and mineral extraction.
