BASF Coatings is accelerating its sustainability strategy by expanding its portfolio of biomass-balanced products into new markets. Following successful rollouts in Europe and Asia, the company is set to introduce its eco-friendly coatings to the North American automotive refinish market later this year.

This move strengthens BASF Coatings’ position as a global leader in sustainable transformation within the coatings industry, reinforcing its commitment to carbon reduction and the circular economy.

Sustainable Innovation Under Proven Brands

BASF’s biomass-balanced coatings are offered under well-known brands such as:

  • ReSource (for automotive OEM coatings and functional textured films)
  • Glasurit® Eco Balance
  • R-M® eSense

With over 250 sales products already available globally under the biomass balance approach, the company is expanding its reach. It now aims to serve North American customers in the automotive refinishing segment.

Driving Customer Value and Carbon Reduction

“With the upcoming expansion of our offering for North America, we are further strengthening our commitment to sustainability,” said Dr. Markus Piepenbrink, Head of Sustainability at BASF Coatings. “We aim to deliver high-performance and environmentally responsible solutions that also help our customers move toward a more sustainable coatings industry,” Dr. Piepenbrink added.

Dennis Dropmann, Sustainability Manager and mass balance expert at BASF Coatings, added, “We’re replacing part of our fossil resources with renewable raw materials. As a result, we’re significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” In 2024 alone, our biomass-balanced products helped avoid around 8 million kilograms of CO₂, and we are targeting the 10 million mark by 2025.”

The Biomass Balance Approach: How It Works

BASF starts its biomass balance approach by using renewable raw materials at the beginning of the production chain—during the manufacturing of basic chemicals. It then attributes the proportion of renewable inputs to specific end products using a certified, traceable method.

The certification system REDcert² validates BASF’s replacement of fossil resources. It ensures the use of sustainable alternatives in the final biomass-balanced products.

Leading the Way in Coatings Sustainability

As global demand rises for more sustainable manufacturing practices, BASF Coatings continues to lead by example. The company offers practical, scalable solutions that deliver both environmental and economic value. The North American expansion of its biomass-balanced coatings marks a significant step. It advances the journey toward a greener, more responsible future for the coatings industry.
