Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder, Ola, introduced the Bharat Cell, an advanced lithium cell battery entirely developed in India. The innovative technology, now in advanced trial stages, aims to transform the electric mobility sector in India.

Aggarwal asserted that the Bharat Cell represents a significant advancement in lithium cell technology, comparable to the leap from 4G to 5G. It features higher energy density, quicker charging times, and lower costs than the current industry leaders.

The battery has already secured certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), facilitating its commercial production at Ola’s Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu.

Bharat Cell is designed for use not only in Ola’s electric vehicles, but also in home and grid energy storage systems. Its high energy density and reduced cobalt content enhance its cost-effectiveness and performance.

While the core technology for the cathode and anode is developed domestically, the raw materials are currently sourced internationally. As reported by manufacturingtodayindia.com, Aggarwal is positive that India can establish a localized supply chain within the next four to five years, positioning the country as a significant player in the global lithium cell market.
