Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has partnered with KPIT Technologies to advance hydrogen-based mobility in Kerala. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the Global Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Summit in Kochi. The collaboration, aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to establish Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) in Kochi and Trivandrum to support pilot hydrogen mobility projects. These efforts will enable safe and sustainable hydrogen-powered public transportation between the two cities.
Advancing Indigenous Hydrogen Technology
The collaboration supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by integrating home-grown hydrogen technologies into India’s clean energy landscape. BPCL will deploy an indigenously developed alkaline electrolyser for hydrogen production; meanwhile, KPIT Technologies will supply a locally designed fuel cell-powered bus.
Pilot Project to Generate Critical Real-World Data
The initiative aims to gather essential performance data on fuel cell buses operating in Kerala’s diverse climatic conditions, including high humidity, temperature variations, and heavy rainfall. These insights will improve the reliability of fuel cell technology and facilitate large-scale adoption in the future.
BPCL’s Hydrogen Refuelling Stations will produce high-purity green hydrogen (>99.99%) to fuel these buses, ensuring a sustainable energy source. Additionally, BPCL will gain valuable experience in hydrogen dispensing, helping build a robust hydrogen mobility framework for India.
Paving the Way for a Cleaner Future
BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G. Krishnakumar commented, “Hydrogen-powered mobility is the future of sustainable transportation. Through this partnership, we are taking significant strides towards building a hydrogen ecosystem in India, providing clean, efficient, and locally developed solutions for public transport”.
The project will evaluate fuel cell reliability, assess fleet feasibility with passengers, and promote hydrogen vehicle adoption in India.
According to PR Newswire, BPCL strengthens its commitment to green energy, supporting India’s shift to a sustainable future.
