Chennai-based startup Carbon Loops is revolutionizing urban waste management by converting food waste into biogas and organic manure. The company tackles the twin challenges of waste disposal and sustainable energy production.
Efficient Waste Collection and Processing
Carbon Loops collects 10-12 tons of food waste daily from institutions in Chennai and nearby areas. They transport the waste to their facility in Uthiramerur, where they segregate, shred, and compost it.
Through anaerobic digestion, the company not only minimizes landfill waste but also produces biogas. The company uses this biogas as an eco-friendly cooking fuel or converts it into electricity. Additionally, it distributes the resulting organic manure free of cost to farmers, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Impressive Impact and Efficiency
Over the past three years, Carbon Loops has:
*Processed 6,242 metric tonnes of food waste
*Diverted 5,024 metric tonnes from landfills
*Produced 2,541 metric tonnes of organic manure
A single tonne of food waste generates approximately 70 kg of biogas, which is equivalent to five LPG cylinders, demonstrating the efficiency of their system.
Recognition and Expansion
Founder Kern Agarwal emphasized the program’s potential to strengthen India’s startup ecosystem by fostering dialogue between venture capitalists and entrepreneurs. Carbon Loops’ efforts have received national recognition. As per knnindia.co.in, Carbon Loop’ scalable model drives sustainable waste management, renewable energy, and decarbonisation across Tamil Nadu.
