The Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) has entered into a tripartite agreement with GAIL (India) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to produce compressed biogas (CBG) from urban solid waste.
Project to Cover Six Municipal Corporations
The initiative will target six municipal corporations: Ambikapur, Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Rajnandgaon, and Dhamtari.
Under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme, the project aims to process 350 tons of urban waste and 500 tons of surplus biomass daily.
This will result in the production of 70 tons of CBG per day.
Division of Responsibilities Between GAIL and BPCL
GAIL will establish CBG plants in Ambikapur, Raigarh, and Korba, while BPCL will set up similar facilities in Bilaspur, Dhamtari, and Rajnandgaon.
Significant Investment and Sustainable Goals
The project involves an investment of ₹600 crore. Beyond biogas production, the initiative will promote sustainable practices by utilizing co-products from the plants for organic farming.
Environmental Benefits and Net-Zero Aspirations
By ensuring effective waste disposal, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to Chhattisgarh’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
As reported by business-standard.com, the collaboration of Chhattisgarh Biofuel, GAIL and BPCL represents a step forward in tackling urban waste while supporting clean energy solutions.
