How to Revive Indian Economy in the Post COVID-19 Period? – Need for National Brain Storming
– N S Venkatraman
Recession is the biggest danger from the on-going COVID-19 Crisis. It is in these times that the government should work towards identifying the major challenges in reviving the economy. The government may take the help of the industry experts and experienced people to form think thanks to cater to all the fields and revive the economy from the micro- level upwards. Our author highlights the challenges and possible solutions
needed to revive the economy.
The Relevance of Photocatalysis for Energy Conversion and Storage
– Prof. B. Viswanathan, IIT-Madras
Photo-catalytic processes have become very promising with much
advancement in the last few years particularly in areas of energy conversion
and storage. This article studies the prospect of three processes: water-splitting of hydrogen, carbon-dioxide utilization, and reduction of dinitrogen. Storage of hydrogen and carbon dioxide is also briefly evaluated.
Cooling Towers- Key to Improved Efficiency
– P.C Srinivasan, Rohit Shukla- Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd.
Many processes generate enormous heat such as the urea/ammonia process for instance. This heat needs to be continuously dissipated for operational efficiency. Cooling towers provide cold water which conveys the heat generated away. This article is a case study in a fertilizer plant of how the performance auditing of cooling towers and its continuous monitoring helped in optimizing cooling tower performance and ensuring energy efficiency.
Solutions to Industrial Problems
– Raghava Chari
The author has provided various solutions related to real-life industry problems he found in his 45 years of operational experience in process plants. In this feature, problems related to primary reformers, panel instrumentation, circulating pumps, and repeatedly rupturing discs in plants are covered.
Role of Physics-based models in Digital Twins: Importance of CFD, DEM, FEA and system simulation
– Ravindra Aglave, Siemens Digital Industry Software, Thomas Eppinger, Siemens Digital Industry Software, Vivek Vitankar, Fluidimensions (a Siemens partner)
Few industries are as complex as the chemical industry in terms of the chemical reaction and equipment employment. The traditional thumb-rule based approaches are inadequate, those still widely used, in determining many of the important parameters required. Now with the latest mathematical modeling and simulation software’s it is possible to evaluate
the design and operational systems very realistically so as to optimize the process comprehensively, as outlined in this article.
Chemingineering – Caring Hands
– K Sahasranaman, Independent Consultant
COVID-19 has changed the outlook of the world towards humanity. The very matter of fact product like sanitizer has suddenly become crucially important in warding off this virus. The chemical industry has risen to the occasion by producing ingredients like isopropyl alcohol and ethanol, etc to cater to the surging demand for sanitizer in the global market.
Our columnist explains the details of sanitizer and the role of the chemical
industry in enabling its production.
