In 2025, Clariant proudly celebrates a major milestone—50 years of Exolit AP flame retardants protecting lives and property across the globe. Based on advanced ammonium polyphosphate (APP) technology, Exolit AP has become the industry benchmark in a wide range of applications—from intumescent coatings and fire barrier sealing systems to PIR insulation foams and battery housings for e-mobility. Alongside its proven performance, Exolit AP sustainability continues to gain importance as the industry moves toward safer, more environmentally conscious solutions. Yet, as Clariant reflects on this legacy, the company remains firmly focused on shaping the future of fire protection.

A Legacy of Innovation Since 1975

Clariant produced its first batch of Exolit AP in 1975 at its Knapsack site in Germany. From that point on, Exolit AP revolutionized the flame retardant market. What started as a single groundbreaking solution has evolved into a comprehensive, industry-leading product line known for exceptional performance and reliability.

Clariant continues to push boundaries. Most recently, the company launched its first melamine-free grade of Exolit AP, reaffirming its position as a pioneer in sustainability and fire safety.

Advancing Sustainable Fire Protection

The new melamine-free Exolit AP represents a significant leap toward more sustainable flame retardant technologies. Free from substances of very high concern (SVHC) and melamine, this new grade meets the growing demand for safer, eco-conscious alternatives. It does so without compromising fire resistance.

As per the press release, Clariant specifically designed this product for Passive Fire Protection (PFP) systems such as firestop applications, intumescent coatings, and flame-retardant insulation panels. Much like the ongoing market shift toward PFAS-free products, customers and brands are now actively seeking cleaner, safer options for fire protection.

Exolit AP 435 Evolves for a Greener Tomorrow

Building on the success of the melamine-free launch, Clariant is now enhancing its flagship product: Exolit AP 435. Known for its exceptional stability and performance in water-based formulations, this updated version maintains the core attributes customers trust. It also improves regulatory compliance and enhances future-readiness.

This evolution underscores Clariant’s proactive response to industry trends and regulations, ensuring long-term relevance and superior fire protection performance.

Partnerships Power Progress

Clariant attributes much of its success to strong, long-standing partnerships with customers. Many of these collaborations span decades and have fueled continuous innovation in fire safety.

Now, as Clariant looks to develop the next generation of flame retardants, it is actively seeking new partners who share its vision for sustainability. Clariant works closely with industry leaders to ensure its innovations match real-world needs. At the same time, it maintains the highest performance standards.

Key Milestones in the Exolit AP Journey

Clariant’s five-decade journey with Exolit AP includes a series of defining achievements:

  • 1975 – Launch of Exolit AP 422
  • 1983 – Introduction of Exolit AP 462, the first encapsulated APP
  • 1990s – Development of specialized intumescent coating solutions
  • 2000s – Strategic market expansion in fire protection
  • 2015 – Launch of Exolit AP 435, setting new standards in viscosity control

Looking Ahead: Innovation Continues

Through decades of change, Exolit AP has remained a cornerstone of Clariant’s flame retardant portfolio. From its origins at Hoechst AG to its integration into Clariant in 1997, every era has brought new challenges and breakthroughs.

The launch of melamine-free Exolit AP is more than a product milestone—it symbolizes our ongoing dedication to sustainability, performance, and innovation,” said Adrian Beard, Global Industry Market Manager Flame Retardants.

A Future Built on Innovation and Sustainability

Clariant is not just commemorating 50 years of achievement—it is laying the groundwork for the next 50. Clariant offers sustainable, high-performance solutions like the melamine-free Exolit AP and the evolved Exolit AP 435. These innovations address the growing demands of safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental responsibility.

“The same pioneering spirit that inspired our first innovations in 1975 still drives us today,” said Stefan Brejc. He is the Global Vice President Segment Coatings & Adhesives. “As we celebrate this golden anniversary, we are not just looking back—we’re moving forward with purpose.”
