Covestro is strengthening its commitment to climate neutrality and the circular economy with an ambitious new energy efficiency goal. By 2030, the company aims to reduce energy consumption per ton of product by 20% compared to 2020 levels. This reduction equates to approximately 5,50,000 tons of CO2 emissions—comparable to the annual emissions of a city with 70,000 residents or the CO2 output of 1,80,000 cars driven for a year.
Driving Climate-Neutral Production with Innovation
The energy efficiency target is a key step toward Covestro’s broader goal of achieving climate-neutral production by 2035. The company plans to reach this milestone through more efficient processes and cutting-edge technologies. One example is the newly commissioned reactor at Covestro’s Dormagen site. This advanced system repurposes waste heat from production to generate steam for further manufacturing processes, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 22,000 tons annually.
Energy Efficiency as a Cornerstone of Business Strategy
Energy efficiency is central to Covestro’s corporate strategy. “Climate-neutral production is only possible if we significantly reduce our energy consumption,” explained Dr. Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer at Covestro.
Dreier added, “Currently, renewable energy is not available in sufficient quantities or at affordable prices to meet demand. Additionally, as a supplier of standard products, we must keep manufacturing costs competitive on a global scale.” Given the high energy costs in Germany and Europe, reducing energy consumption is a crucial factor for business success.
Expanding the Use of Renewable Energy
Alongside energy efficiency improvements, Covestro continues to increase its reliance on renewable energy. In 2024, the company signed a contract with bp to supply solar power to its site in Tarragona, Spain, raising the site’s renewable electricity share to 30%. By 2026, a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with RWE will provide 60% renewable electricity to Covestro’s Antwerp site. In the U.S., four Covestro facilities have been powered entirely by renewable energy since early 2025.
A Confident Step Toward Sustainability
Covestro remains committed to achieving its climate goals. “We are on the right track, and I am confident we will meet our sustainability targets,” said Thorsten Dreier. He added, “Our energy efficiency initiatives will play a crucial role in this journey.” As per the press release, with a strong focus on innovative solutions and renewable energy integration, Covestro is making significant strides toward a more sustainable and competitive future.
