In preparation for World Environment Day 2025, the Centre for Responsible Business (CRB) organised a high-level Roundtable Dialogue on May 29, 2025, at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The event focused on the theme “Opportunities and Challenges for SMEs in Plastic Recycling in India.”
Highlighting SMEs in India’s Plastic Recycling Value Chain
The roundtable aimed to spotlight the crucial yet often overlooked role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in India’s plastic recycling ecosystem. Aligning with this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” the event will gather key stakeholders—including SME recyclers, industry leaders, policymakers, and experts—to discuss collaborative solutions for the plastic waste crisis.
Tackling India’s Plastic Waste Challenge
India generates nearly 26,000 tons of plastic waste daily, with SMEs playing a vital role in waste collection, segregation, and recycling. Despite their importance, SMEs face significant challenges such as limited access to advanced technology, skilled labor, finance, and regulatory clarity. Addressing these hurdles is essential for building an effective circular economy.
Expert Panels to Drive In-Depth Discussions
The dialogue featured two expert-led panel discussions. The first panel will explore the current industry landscape and perspectives on plastic recycling. The second will focus on creating an enabling ecosystem to support sustainable SME-led recycling efforts. Prominent representatives are expected to participate in the event. These include experts from UNEP, MoEFCC, FICCI, SIDBI, Coca-Cola, and Recykal.
Driving Actionable Recommendations and Inclusive Engagement
CRB will use insights from the roundtable to draft a comprehensive recommendation report aimed at enhancing SME participation and effectiveness in plastic recycling. The event also encourages attendees to nominate grassroots-level SME recyclers. This helps ensure the dialogue remains inclusive and grounded in real-world experiences.
Advancing Responsible Business and Circular Economy Goals
The initiative reinforces CRB’s commitment to promoting responsible business practices. It also supports the development of a circular plastic economy in India. As reported by knnindia.co.in, CRB is facilitating this important conversation. The organisation aims to catalyse meaningful change in how plastic waste is managed across the country.
