Crystal Crop Acquires Bayer’s Ethoxysulfuron Assets

Crystal Crop Protection Limited, a player in agricultural innovation, has announced its global acquisition of the active ingredient ethoxysulfuron from Bayer AG.

The acquisition, targeting sales in select Asian countries, marks Crystal’s thirteenth strategic transaction and its second partnership with Bayer after acquiring Bayer’s Indian cotton, pearl millet, and mustard seed portfolio in 2021.

Strengthening Market Leadership in Rice Herbicides

The deal is among Crystal’s largest acquisitions, boosting the company’s EBITDA by 20% and solidifying its leadership in the rice herbicide market.

Ethoxysulfuron, a trusted active ingredient under the Sunrice trademark, is known for its effectiveness against broad-leaved weeds and sedges in rice and cereal crops.

The addition significantly enhances Crystal’s portfolio of advanced crop protection solutions.

Expanding Regional Reach and Cost-Effective Solutions

By manufacturing ethoxysulfuron locally, Crystal aims to deliver cost-effective, sustainable solutions to farmers across India, South Asia, and South-East Asia, including Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Pakistan.

The approach will create cost synergies and improve accessibility for farmers in these regions.

Driving Innovation with Farmer-Centric Solutions

Ankur Aggarwal, Managing Director of Crystal Crop Protection Limited said, “The acquisition reflects our commitment to strengthening our portfolio with impactful solutions for farmers. We aim to leverage our strong distribution network and manufacturing capabilities. This will ensure that advanced weed management solutions reach farmers efficiently across India, South Asia, and South-East Asia.”

Crystal’s deep understanding of the rice ecosystem makes this acquisition a strategic fit. It enhances the company’s ability to provide end-to-end solutions, from seed to harvest.

A Legacy of Strategic Acquisitions

Crystal has built a strong reputation for driving growth through strategic acquisitions.

Earlier in 2024, the company acquired I&B Seeds, further diversifying its offerings in crop protection, seeds, and farm mechanization.

Over the years, Crystal has acquired brands from leading global players such as Syngenta, FMC, Bayer, BASF, and Dow-Corteva. These acquisitions have reinforced its position as an industry leader.

Strengthening Global Footprint

With backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Crystal continues to expand its presence in South Asia and South-East Asia. The company leverages over four decades of expertise to drive its growth.

The company’s growing partnerships and acquisitions ensure it remains at the forefront of delivering innovative, farmer-centric agricultural solutions.

As per the press release, the latest acquisition reaffirms Crystal Crop Protection’s mission. The company aims to empower farmers with sustainable and cost-effective tools to improve productivity and resilience.
