As part of the government’s action plan for Viksit Bharat@2047, the department of chemicals and petrochemicals (DCPC) launched the first-ever training programme focused on “Chemical and Petrochemical Industrial Safety.”

DCPC Training programme took place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, marking a significant step towards enhancing safety measures in the chemical and petrochemical sector.

Objective and Scope of the Programme

The two-day residential training programme, held from 28th to 29th November 2024, was conducted at the Central Institute of Petrochemical Engineering & Technology (CIPET): Institute of Petrochemicals Technology (IPT) Ahmedabad.

The programme specifically targeted Major Accident Hazard (MAH) units in the chemical and petrochemical industries.

The authorities have currently numbered 2,393 units across the country, which are crucial to industrial safety.

The training begins a series aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all identified MAH units across India.

Over the next five years, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals plans to organize 48 such training sessions. Additionally, eight more training programmes are scheduled for the remainder of the current financial year.

Participation and Expert Lectures

The inaugural programme in Ahmedabad saw participation from 100 representatives across 62 chemical industries.

Over the course of two days, 13 specialized lectures were delivered by eminent experts from both industry and academia, including distinguished speakers from IITs and NITs. These lectures focused on various aspects of chemical and petrochemical industrial safety.

Thematic Areas Covered

The training programme covered a wide range of important topics, including:

  • Accident & Risk Management
  • Loss Statistics and Prevention
  • Environmental Protection and Spill Prevention
  • Advanced Risk Assessment Techniques
  • Regulatory and Standard Compliances
  • Fire and Explosion Safety
  • Hazard Identification Techniques
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
  • Process Safety Management (PSM)
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Emergency Response

Incident Management and Regulatory Compliance

The designers designed the topics to equip participants with the knowledge needed to manage safety challenges in the chemical and petrochemical sectors effectively.

Hands-On Experience with Mock Drill

The programme included a mock drill to ensure that participants effectively applied the theoretical knowledge gained during the sessions.

The hands-on experience gave industrial employees the opportunity to practice emergency response procedures in real-world scenarios.

Conclusion

This first training session was a successful initiative that highlighted the Government’s commitment to improving industrial safety.

As reported by pib.gov.in, DCPC Training will play a crucial role in creating safer working environments across India’s chemical and petrochemical industries.
