Eni and MSC Group, a player in transport and cruise services, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on initiatives aimed at sustainability and energy transition.
The partnership marks a significant expansion of their business relationship, with a focus on decarbonising operations and exploring innovative solutions.
Expanding into Sustainable Operations
The agreement will see Eni and MSC explore the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels like hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and bio-LNG, and renewable lubricants across MSC’s fleets.
This aligns with Eni’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and MSC’s ongoing efforts to minimise its environmental footprint.
Additionally, the two companies will evaluate renewable energy solutions to decarbonise MSC’s sites and facilities, further reinforcing their dedication to sustainability.
Synergies in Logistics and Agro-Industrial Activities
The partnership extends beyond fuel alternatives to encompass logistics services, intermodal transport, and agro-industrial activities.
Key initiatives include producing raw materials for biorefining and developing innovative transport solutions for HVO biofuels.
Commitment to Decarbonisation
Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi stated, “The agreement marks the start of our collaboration with MSC in the decarbonisation of transport and cruise services. MSC is the world leader in the sector, and together, we can implement impactful decarbonisation initiatives to reduce emissions in transport systems”.
Circular Economy and Waste Management
The partnership also emphasises circular economy practices.
Eni and MSC will work on incorporating renewable and recycled plastics into MSC’s fleets and managing waste generated on board.
The companies plan to redevelop decommissioned Eni assets, turning them into productive sites.
Research and Development Initiatives
The collaboration includes joint research and development projects, with a focus on advancing decarbonisation technologies.
The companies will also participate in the Open-es platform, which promotes sustainability across value chains.
Another critical area of focus is the decommissioning of offshore platforms, where both companies aim to apply their expertise to ensure environmentally responsible practices.
Building on a Trusted Partnership
MSC Group President Diego Aponte commented, “At MSC, we are focused on achieving a successful energy transition. To do this, we need partners we can trust.” Eni has been a trusted partner for many years, and this MOU is a natural evolution of our relationship”.
As reported by msn.com, the collaboration marks progress in integrating sustainability into the operations of two global leaders. It aims to set an example for the transport and cruise sectors.
