Small modular reactors (SMRs) have been highlighted as a key component in India’s green energy transition, as mentioned by the finance minister in the budget speech. The minister emphasized that nuclear energy is set to play a significant role in India’s energy mix, and announced that the government will collaborate with the private sector to establish Bharat Small Reactors, as well as to advance research and development in the field and explore new nuclear technologies.
SMRs, which have a capacity ranging from 100 MW to 250 MW, are gaining popularity worldwide, with numerous countries investing in these smaller reactors. M.K. Narayanan, former national security advisor expressed strong support for SMRs.
Narayanan pointed out that the challenges of setting up large nuclear reactors have made SMRs an attractive alternative. He described SMRs as a compelling solution, noting that they generate less nuclear waste, which can be managed more effectively, especially with the use of advanced fuels like ANEEL.
As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, nuclear scientist and former chairman of the atomic energy commission Dr. Anil Kakodkar supported the adoption of SMRs.
