ExsxonMobil and Pertamina, the Indonesian state-owned energy company, have embarked on a collaborative study endeavour to explore the widespread adoption of technologies aimed at reducing emissions, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen production.

The initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed during COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland, and seeks to bolster Indonesia’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. Leveraging their longstanding partnership, ExxonMobil and Pertamina aim to make significant strides in mitigating emissions within challenging sectors.

Dan Ammann, President, ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, highlighting Indonesia’s potential to lead in emission reduction efforts. He stressed the importance of collaboration among governments, the private sector, and communities to achieve tangible progress in emissions reduction.

ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions is dedicated to advancing lower-emission technologies and supporting global emission reduction endeavours, with a focus on capturing CO₂ emissions from industrial activities and storing them securely underground.

Carbon capture and storage technology has demonstrated its effectiveness in significantly reducing emissions across various high-emission sectors such as manufacturing, power generation, refining, and petrochemicals.

As reported by fuelsandlubes.com, ExxonMobil’s commitment extends beyond CCS, with investments in biofuels and hydrogen to address emissions in sectors that pose significant decarbonization challenges. With over three decades of experience in CO₂ capture, ExxonMobil holds a substantial equity share in the world’s CCS capacity, accounting for approximately one-fifth of the global total, equivalent to nine million metric tons per year.
