GHCL, one of India’s leading chemical company, has secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change for its ambitious Soda Ash Greenfield Project in Kutch, Gujarat.

The approval GHCL secured was granted on December 12, 2024, paving the way for the establishment of a state-of-the-art 1.1 MMTPA (Million Metric Tons Per Annum) Soda Ash plant.

Major Investment to Boost Production

The project has estimated capital investment of ₹6,500 crore and to be executed in next six years.

Once completed, the new plant will significantly enhance GHCL’s production capacity, almost doubling it.

The company is currently the second-largest soda ash manufacturer in India, leveraging its nearly four-decade-long expertise in the industry.

Aligning with India’s Green Energy Vision

R.S. Jalan, Managing Director of GHCL Limited said, “This approval will significantly contribute to India’s vision of Green Energy and AtmaNirbharta”.

India is aiming for 500 GW of installed green energy capacity by 2030.

As part of this push, the demand for soda ash, an essential industrial raw material, will reach 7.0 MTPA.

Currently, India produces just 3.6 MTPA, representing a mere 6% of the global soda ash manufacturing capacity.

Focus on Modern Technology and Carbon Neutrality

The Greenfield project will feature cutting-edge technology designed to prioritize sustainability. GHCL plans to explore green energy sources to achieve carbon neutrality at the plant.

The initiative underscores the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and modern industrial practices.

Supporting Local Communities and MSMEs

The new plant will bring significant socio-economic benefits to the surrounding region.

GHCL will implement robust CSR and sustainability programs, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Additionally, the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in sectors such as logistics and packaging materials is expected to be encouraged.

The initiatives aim to uplift local communities, foster economic development, and ensure long-term prosperity for the region.

As per the press release, GHCL’s Greenfield Soda Ash Project promises to be a transformative endeavour. Furthermore, it will contribute to India’s industrial growth while adhering to global sustainability standards.
