The government has approved the establishment of a new brownfield ammonia-urea complex at Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) in Namrup, Assam.
Project Capacity and Investment
The facility will have an annual production capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tons (LMT) of urea and will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹10,601.40 crore. To support the project, the government has approved National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) to hold an 18% stake in the joint venture (JV), exceeding the usual limits set by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) guidelines.
Oversight and Implementation
To ensure smooth execution, the government will form an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) to oversee the plant’s establishment and progress.
Boosting Fertiliser Supply in Key Regions
The ammonia-urea complex project aims to boost domestic urea production, especially in the North-Eastern region. It will help meet the growing fertiliser demand in Bihar, West Bengal, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
Improved Efficiency and Employment Generation
The Namrup-IV unit will operate with higher energy efficiency, contributing to sustainability. Additionally, the project will directly and indirectly generate employment, benefiting the local economy.
Advancing India’s Self-Sufficiency in Urea Production
As reported by msn.com, the initiative will help reduce India’s dependency on urea imports. It will also support self-sufficiency in urea production by strengthening the domestic fertilizer industry.
