The union cabinet has approved the extension of a one-time special package for Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizers.
The extension, proposed by the department of fertilizers, will provide an additional subsidy of ₹3,500 per metric ton (MT) beyond the nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) rates.
The special package will remain in effect from January 1, 2025, until further notice, ensuring farmers have sustainable access to affordable DAP fertilizers.
Ensuring Affordable Fertilizers for Farmers
The decision underscores the government’s commitment to making DAP available to farmers at subsidized and reasonable prices.
The ₹3,500 per MT special package, coupled with the existing NBS subsidy, will help maintain a steady supply of DAP at affordable rates.
The government continues to prioritize farmers’ welfare by keeping essential inputs like fertilizers within their financial reach.
Despite challenges such as global market volatility and geopolitical uncertainties, the government has successfully ensured the availability of DAP for the upcoming kharif and rabi cropping seasons in 2024-25.
Support for P&K Fertilizers under the NBS Scheme
Farmers benefit from subsidies on 28 grades of phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers. These subsidies are provided under the NBS Scheme. The scheme has been in effect since April 1, 2010.
Fertilizer manufacturers and importers make these products available to farmers at subsidized prices.
A Continuation of Relief Measures
In July 2024, the cabinet approved an earlier version of this one-time special package for DAP.
The package provided an additional ₹3,500 per MT subsidy. This subsidy is for the period from April 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. The approximate financial cost is ₹2,625 crore.
The latest extension builds on this initiative, ensuring uninterrupted relief for farmers beyond 2024.
A Farmer-Centric Approach
The government’s proactive measures demonstrate its dedication to supporting farmers and stabilizing agricultural input costs.
As reported by msn.com, the Union Government extends this subsidy. This move reaffirms its commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and securing the welfare of the farming community.
