Himachal Pradesh took a major step toward renewable energy as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu laid the foundation stone for North India’s first green hydrogen plant.

The one MW facility will be built in Dabhota, Nalagarh Tehsil of Solan district.

Project Overview and Collaboration

The Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) and Oil India Limited (OIL) are jointly developing the ₹9.04 crore project.

The initiative stems from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on April 26, 2023, between the state government and Oil India Limited. This agreement also covers broader renewable energy efforts, including solar power, geothermal energy, and compressed biogas.

During the ceremony, Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the project’s significance. He emphasized its role in advancing Himachal Pradesh’s renewable energy goals. The construction is expected to be completed within a year.

Location and Technical Details

Authorities selected a 4,000-square-metre plot for the facility after a thorough evaluation. The plant will use an alkaline electrolysis process, employing a potassium hydroxide solution to generate hydrogen from renewable energy sources. This method will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.

Production Capacity and Resource Consumption

The plant will produce 423 kg of green hydrogen daily.

To achieve this, it will consume thirteen litres of water per kilogram of hydrogen, sourced from underground reserves via tube wells.

The electrolysis process will require 52.01 units of electricity per kilogram of hydrogen. The projected annual production stands at 154,395 kg.

As reported by knnindia.co.in, the green hydrogen plant is a major milestone. It strengthens Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
