The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay’s (IIT-Bombay) Research Hub for Green Energy and Sustainability (GESH) has received a generous donation of over ₹159 crore from a US-based alumnus.

The significant funding underscores the institute’s commitment to advancing green energy and sustainability.

Focus on Green Future Outlined at Conclave

Recently, IIT-B hosted a one-day pan-IIT sustainability conclave organized by GESH, where it released a detailed report.

The document proposed several actionable strategies to promote a greener future, including:

*Advancing environmental education and research

*Prioritizing environmental conservation and management

*Enhancing housekeeping practices, and

*Strengthening safety and governance measures.

The report emphasized GESH’s role in positioning India as a global leader in green energy and sustainability initiatives.

Bridging Research and Real-World Applications

GESH aims to connect academic research with practical applications, fostering innovation to address critical global challenges like climate change and environmental degradation.

The hub seeks interdisciplinary collaboration among academia, industry, and regulatory bodies to nurture talent in sustainability and establish India as a frontrunner in sustainable energy solutions.

‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Campaign Launched

At the conclave, GESH unveiled the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, symbolizing IIT-B’s dedication to environmental conservation.

Professor Shireesh Kedare, Director of IIT-B, highlighted the hub’s mission to support the global shift to green energy through research, education, and capacity building.

“Our vision is to advance sustainability, climate solutions, and related fields by leveraging expertise from IIT-Bombay and beyond,” he said.

Research and Educational Initiatives

Under the leadership of Professor Sanjay Mahajani and a fourteen-member core committee, GESH has already funded 22 research projects from a pool of 75 proposals.

These projects focus on fundamental, translational, and educational areas, aligned with the hub’s mission to drive solution-oriented innovation.

Education remains a key priority for GESH, with plans to develop industry-specific training programs and integrate sustainability-focused courses.

The institute has introduced the course ‘Sustainability: Theory to Action’, which sets the foundation for a comprehensive sustainability curriculum. Over 150 hours of industry training are also scheduled to begin soon, aimed at grooming future leaders in sustainability.

Plans for a School of Sustainability

Looking ahead, GESH intends to establish a School of Sustainability at IIT-Bombay.

The institution will serve as a global hub for education and research in green energy, offering joint programs and collaborations with leading universities worldwide.

Government Support and Praise

Professor Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education and Development of the Northeast Region, commended IIT-B’s initiative during the conclave.

He praised the institute’s efforts in driving sustainability and promoting innovation in green energy.

As reported by msn.com, with the support of its alumni, faculty, and stakeholders, IIT-Bombay’s GESH continues to take strides toward building a sustainable future and positioning India as a global leader in sustainable energy solutions.
