IIT Bombay experienced a significant milestone in 2023-24, with a record 421 Indian patents granted, marking a 160% increase from the previous year’s 162. This surge occurred despite only 131 patents being filed during the same period, attributed to the Indian patent office clearing a backlog of applications.
The electrical engineering department led with 121 patents, followed by mechanical engineering with 81, and biosciences and bioengineering with 67.
The institute has seen a consistent rise in patent filings. From 104 applications in 2019-20, the number surged to 142 in 2020-21, driven by Covid-related technologies, and then slightly decreased to 125 in 2022-23. Notably, the past two years have seen the number of patents granted surpassing the number of applications filed, due to the backlog clearance.
As reported by timesofindia.indiatimes.com, the number of foreign patents filed or granted has remained relatively low, staying in the single digits over the last three years at the prestigious Powai campus.
