India has successfully reached 100 GW of solar energy capacity, as announced by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on February 9, 2025.

The achievement moves the country closer to its ambitious goal of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.

Overcoming Challenges to Meet Renewable Energy Goals

India initially set a target of 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022, including 100 GW from solar. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed progress.

Despite these challenges, India has emerged as a global leader in renewable energy, driven by large-scale solar initiatives.

Key Initiatives Driving Solar Growth

The country’s solar expansion has been fuelled by initiatives such as solar parks, rooftop solar installations, and widespread use of solar panels.

Rooftop Solar Gains Momentum

Programs like the PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana are making rooftop solar a household reality, providing clean and affordable energy to millions of homes.

As a result, India’s solar capacity has increased 35 times in the last decade, from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100.33 GW in 2025.

Future Growth and Record Installations

India’s solar and hybrid energy projects now total 296.59 GW, with 84.10 GW under implementation and 47.49 GW under tender.

The year 2024 witnessed record-breaking growth, with 24.5 GW of solar capacity added, more than double the installations of 2023.

Leading States in Solar Expansion

Key states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu played a crucial role in this achievement, contributing significantly to utility-scale and rooftop solar projects.

As reported by projectstoday.com, with this momentum, India is well on track to meet its ambitious clean energy goals.
