Union minister for coal and mines, G. Kishan Reddy, met H.E. Raúl Alejandro Jalil, Governor of Catamarca, Argentina, in New Delhi to focus on enhancing cooperation in the mining sector -particularly in lithium exploration and investment opportunities.
MoU to Boost Lithium Exploration
A major outcome of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca.
The agreement aims to deepen collaboration in the exploration and development of critical mineral resources, especially lithium.
Argentina’s Strategic Importance in Lithium Supply
Argentina, part of the renowned ‘Lithium Triangle,’ holds some of the world’s largest lithium reserves. Given India’s increasing demand for lithium to support electric vehicle (EV) batteries and renewable energy storage, this partnership is crucial.
The meeting highlighted the ongoing lithium exploration efforts by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Greenko in Catamarca. Both sides discussed increasing the participation of Indian companies in Argentina’s mining projects and explored opportunities for long-term supply agreements, joint ventures, and future investments.
Focus on Policy, Regulation, and Sustainability
Senior officials from both countries exchanged views on policy frameworks, regulatory procedures, and sustainable mining practices.
The dialogue aims to create a transparent and efficient environment for collaboration. Additionally, both sides emphasized the importance of knowledge-sharing and infrastructure support to strengthen India’s involvement in Argentina’s mining industry.
Paving the Way for Future Cooperation
By signing the MoU, India and Argentina have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation in the critical minerals sector.
As reported by pib.gov.in, the partnership is expected to accelerate lithium exploration projects, improve resource security, and open new avenues for Indian companies in Latin America’s mining landscape.
