India Emerges as the Fourth Global Research Hub

According to a recent analysis, India has become a prominent centre for academic research globally, securing the fourth position worldwide in terms of academic paper output. India ranks closely behind China, the US, and the UK in research performance, as noted by Ben Sowter, Vice-President of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), provider of higher education analytics.

The QS World University Rankings 2024 by subject, released recently, feature a total of 69 Indian universities, marking a significant presence in global academia. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) stands out as the leading Indian institution, securing the 20th position globally for development studies.

In the field of management studies, institutions like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta have secured positions among the top twenty-five globally, showcasing India’s prowess in this domain.

Similarly, IIT Guwahati has demonstrated excellence in data science, achieving a global ranking of 51-70. Additionally, Chennai’s Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences has excelled in dentistry studies, securing the 24th position worldwide.

As reported by NDTV, this year, a total of 69 Indian universities, with 424 entries, have made it to the QS World University Rankings by subject, reflecting an increase from the previous year’s count of 66 universities and 355 entries.

QS emphasizes that its World University Rankings, now in its 20th edition, encompass 1,500 institutions across 104 locations, prioritizing aspects like employability and sustainability. The rankings are based on the analysis of 17.5 million academic papers and inputs from over 240,000 academic faculty and employers.

While the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retains its top position for the twelfth consecutive year, the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford follow closely in the second and third spots, respectively. India emerges as the second most represented country in Asia on the list, with 69 ranked universities, trailing behind China with 101 ranked institutions.
