According to a recent analysis, patents are becoming increasingly prominent in the Indian economy, fuelled by advancements in the deep-technology sector. A study by NASSCOM reveals that Tamil Nadu led the country in the number of patent applications in the fiscal year 2023.
The report, released by the industry association in its seventh annual ‘Patenting Trends in India’ edition, detailed strategies to develop an IP-driven digital economy. The fiscal year 2023 saw a record-breaking increase in patent filings in India, with 83,000 applications, a 24.6 percent rise – the most significant in two decades.
As reported by Outlook, the proportion of patents filed by women also increased, reaching 11.6 percent in FY2022, up from 10.2 percent the previous year. Tamil Nadu, with 9.3 percent of the total filings, outpaced Maharashtra, which accounted for 6.8 percent, becoming the leading state in patent filings.
The report highlights that nearly 70% of patent applications from Indian deep-tech startups are filed through the Chennai patent office, with 25-30% of these start-ups located in Bengaluru. Predominantly, these applications involve AI and healthcare technologies.
Following India, the United States is the second most common country of origin for patents filed by major deep-tech startups in India. Additionally, the report mentions that India’s global patent filing contribution is slightly over 2%, indicating a need for more targeted efforts in enhancing patent filings.
