India Unveils BioE3 Policy at Mission Innovation 2025

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India showcased its flagship BioE3 Policy during the Mission Innovation (MI) Annual Gathering 2025, reinforcing its commitment to clean energy innovation and global sustainability goals.

Mission Innovation 2025: A Global Push for Clean Energy

Held in Seoul, South Korea, the high-profile event brought together international leaders, researchers, and policymakers to accelerate breakthroughs in clean energy technologies. India, a founding member of the MI platform, remains a driving force in collaborative clean energy research and innovation.

India and the Netherlands Lead Biorefinery Mission

As part of Mission Innovation 2.0, India co-leads the Mission Integrated Biorefinery initiative alongside the Netherlands. The mission focuses on developing sustainable biorefinery approaches for fuels, chemicals, and materials—key components in achieving a low-carbon economy.

The DBT’s active participation included engaging in multilateral discussions and exploring new partnerships under various MI missions and technical platforms.

DBT Presents BioE3 Policy

The DBT formally introduced its BioE3 Policy, which centers on leveraging biotechnology for the Environment, Energy, and Economy. The policy was well-received in roundtable discussions, where its alignment with India’s climate priorities and its role under the Integrated Biorefinery Mission were thoroughly examined.

Participants praised the policy for promoting sustainable and low-carbon manufacturing of fuels, chemicals, and materials. By supporting enabling technologies and innovation-driven processes, BioE3 aims to build a resilient and future-ready biomanufacturing ecosystem.

Showcasing India’s Advances in CCUB and Bioenergy

India also shared its progress in Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Bioenergy (CCUB) integration within biomanufacturing. These contributions underscored the country’s commitment to innovation-led decarbonisation. They were discussed in detail during structured roundtables with MI community members.

Engaging with Global Research Institutions

The Indian delegation’s visit included specialised sessions at clean energy facilities, focusing on biotechnology and biomanufacturing priorities. Before the main event, the Indian Embassy in Seoul coordinated strategic meetings at Hanyang University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology.

Global Collaboration to Accelerate Bioinnovation

A key takeaway from the event was the shared recognition that bioinnovations in fuels, chemicals, and materials hold transformative potential for meeting global decarbonisation targets. The Mission Innovation platform, enriched by India’s active engagement, continues to play a crucial role in driving these collaborative efforts forward.

India Strengthens Global Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

The DBT participated in Mission Innovation 2025. It reaffirmed India’s resolve to harness biotechnology. This will serve as a catalyst for sustainable development. As reported by knnindia.co.in, the BioE3 Policy is a pivotal tool in advancing clean energy goals. It fosters international partnerships and propels India’s vision of a low-carbon future.
