India and the US have deepened their collaboration on carbon capture technologies, with a focus on addressing industrial emissions in challenging sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals. This was the central theme of a two-day workshop on ‘Legal and Regulatory Frameworks and Technical Considerations for Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS)’, recently held in New Delhi.

The workshop was jointly organized by NITI Aayog, the US Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, the US Department of Energy’s Office of Carbon Management, and the US Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Program. It brought together senior officials and industry leaders from both nations.

Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India, highlighted the significance of the enduring US-India partnership in advancing CCUS technologies. He cleverly rebranded the abbreviation CCUS as ‘Collaboration and Coordination with the US,’ underscoring the potential of the partnership to spearhead decarbonization efforts in industries vital to India’s economic progress.

Suman Bery, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, discussed India’s ongoing efforts to develop strategies for achieving its Net Zero 2070 goal. He emphasized the necessity of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability and highlighted the importance of various technologies in this transition.

As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, the workshop included sessions on crucial legal, policy, and regulatory issues related to CCUS. Discussions also covered international standards, business opportunities, and the technological potential for carbon capture in diverse industries. Experts from both countries examined strategies for aligning regulatory frameworks and policies to advance CCUS, while also addressing challenges related to liability, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
