The International Zinc Association anticipates that zinc demand in India will double over the next five to ten years, spurred by significant investments in infrastructure and the steel industry. Zinc is primarily used in India for galvanizing steel to prevent corrosion, a crucial process for expanding steel capacities. Currently, India’s annual zinc consumption ranges between 800 and 1,000 tons, with expectations of considerable growth driven by ongoing infrastructure projects.

Martin Van Leeuwen, Global Director, International Zinc Association, pointed out that India’s zinc consumption per capita is only 0.5 kg, much lower than the global average of 4 kg. He highlighted the growing importance of zinc in India, especially for new galvanizing lines and in solar photovoltaic (PV) applications, where zinc is essential for protecting steel.

As reported by ManufacturingToday, looking ahead to 2024, Van Leeuwen is optimistic due to global trends toward green energy, predicting increased opportunities for zinc in the solar PV and wind energy sectors. This growth underscores zinc’s vital role in safeguarding infrastructure and supporting sustainable energy initiatives.
