IOC’s Ethanol Plant to Achieve Full Capacity Shortly

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is on track to achieve full capacity utilisation of its ₹900 crore 2G ethanol plant, which is currently operating at 30% capacity, according to IOC’s Chairman and Managing Director, Shrikant Madhav Vaidya.

As reported by ChiniMandi.com, the bioethanol plant relies on rice husk (parali) as its feedstock, which can be collected for about forty-five days each year and must be stored to ensure a continuous supply. The plant’s annual feedstock requirement is 1,50,000 tons, and with the collection process underway, it is expected to reach full production capacity soon.

In line with government mandates, refineries like IOC are required to blend petrol with a 20 percent bioethanol mix by 2025. Vaidya revealed that in October, IOC’s petrol blend contained 12.5 percent bioethanol, and this proportion will increase to 15 percent next year, gradually progressing toward the 20 percent target by 2025.

Additionally, a portion of the 2G ethanol produced at the plant will be allocated for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in partnership with Lanzajet, a subsidiary of Lanzatech, in which IOC holds a stake.
