Sanat Chattopadhyay, a 1981 graduate of Jadavpur University’s chemical engineering department and a senior executive at a global pharmaceutical company in the US, inaugurated a newly renovated laboratory at his alma mater. He contributed ₹1 crore towards the restoration of the facility.
Reviving a Neglected Facility
During the inauguration, Chattopadhyay emphasized the urgent need for restoration. “The building and equipment, crucial for hands-on education for any chemical engineer, were in urgent need of restoration. It was clear that without intervention, the heart of practical chemical engineering education here would suffer,” he said. The JU pro-vice-chancellor, registrar, and other senior officials were present at the event.
Focus on Sustainability Research
The remaining ₹30 lakh funded the creation of the Sanat Chattopadhyay Research Centre for Sustainable Development (SCRES). The centre is designed to drive impactful research in sustainability, focusing on fostering economic growth while preserving ecological balance. It now stands as an integral part of the department’s academic and research ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
The donation marks a significant step toward revitalizing JU’s infrastructure and strengthening its research capabilities. As reported by telegraphindia.com, it also sets an inspiring example of how JU alumnus can contribute meaningfully to their alma mater’s growth.
