Kaneka Belgium NV announces that its Kaneka Biodegradable Polymer Green Planet™ Expanded Beads—type L40N—are officially excluded from the definition of synthetic polymer microparticles under EU Commission Regulation 2023/2055.

The recognition underscores the company’s commitment to offering sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

A 100% Biomass-Derived Biopolymer

Kaneka Green Planet™ is a fully biodegradable biopolymer made entirely from biomass. Unlike traditional petroleum-based plastics, it decomposes naturally in various environments.

When exposed to soil or seawater, the material breaks down into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, leaving no synthetic residues behind. This innovation reflects Kaneka’s dedication to reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable materials.

Advanced Technology for Diverse Applications

Kaneka developed Green Planet™ Expanded Beads by combining its long-standing Eperan™ particle foam technology with its biodegradable polymer expertise.

The innovative material is lightweight and shock-absorbing, making it ideal for various applications. Companies use it for cushioning in home electric appliances, fresh food transportation containers, and components in the automotive and transport industries.

Moreover, manufacturers can process the foam using existing molding equipment, as its characteristics closely resemble those of polyolefin foams.

Independent Verification Confirms Biodegradability

Normec OWS, an external verification laboratory, conducted a thorough assessment to confirm the product’s microplastic-free status.

During the evaluation, experts tested the material’s aqueous aerobic biodegradability using the OECD 301 B method, which measures CO2 evolution.

The results demonstrated that Kaneka Green Planet™ Expanded Beads achieved a mineralization level exceeding 60% within 28 days. This finding confirms the product’s ability to fully degrade without leaving behind synthetic particles.

Driving a Microplastic-Free Future

Luc Point, General Manager of Foam and Residential Techs EMEA for Kaneka Belgium, emphasized the significance of this milestone.

He stated, “We are proud that the EU Regulation 2023/2055 officially recognizes Kaneka Green Planet™ Expanded Beads L40N as microplastic-free, meeting the highest environmental standards.” This milestone reflects our dedication to protecting the planet and delivering eco-friendly particle foam solutions without compromising performance and quality”.

With this recognition, Kaneka aims to strengthen collaborations with brand owners, molders, and consumers. As per the press release, the company remains committed to advancing sustainable technologies and contributing to a microplastic-free future in the foam applications industry.
