LOHUM, a company focused on sustainable battery raw materials through recycling, repurposing, and low-carbon refining, has announced a ₹2,000 crore investment over the next six years to build a new plant in Krishnagiri, western Tamil Nadu. This facility will specialize in producing cathode active material (CAM) for battery manufacturing.
Production at the 20 GWh plant is expected to commence within eighteen months. The initial phase involves a ₹400 crore investment over the first two years. LOHUM aims to supply its products to major battery manufacturers including Ola, Exide, TVS, and Amara Raja.
The new plant will be equipped to process 20,000 tons of batteries annually, recycling and producing cobalt, nickel, and lithium, each at a capacity of 1,000 tons. The facility will feature a pilot line for CAM production, initially with a capacity of about 750 MWh, which will be scaled up to 20 GWh. Initially, it is anticipated to produce between 5 to 10 GWh of material for gigafactories.
The project benefits from production-linked incentives and capital expenditure subsidies from the Tamil Nadu government. LOHUM provides a range of solutions for recycling and reusing lithium-ion batteries, addressing industry challenges in sustainable energy storage.
As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, by recovering and reusing critical battery raw materials, LOHUM aims to reduce battery costs, decrease reliance on mining, and enhance energy security.
