In a landmark step toward clean and innovative energy solutions, Maharashtra has signed a strategic agreement with Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy giant, ROSATOM, to develop a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) powered by thorium fuel.

Partnership Formalized at High-Level Ceremony

The Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior representatives from Mahagenco and ROSATOM officially signed the agreement during a ceremony. The partnership marks a pivotal moment in India’s nuclear energy landscape, particularly in Maharashtra’s ambition to lead the thorium-based energy revolution.

A Vision for Thorium-Based Innovation

The collaboration focuses on designing, developing, and commercializing thorium-fuelled SMRs within Maharashtra. With thorium being more abundant and potentially safer than uranium, this project could reshape the future of nuclear energy in the state. All development will strictly comply with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) safety norms, ensuring adherence to national and international nuclear safety standards.

‘Make in Maharashtra’ Gets a Clean Energy Boost

Aligned with the state’s ‘Make in Maharashtra’ initiative, the agreement also includes plans to set up a dedicated assembly line for SMRs within Maharashtra. This move will stimulate local manufacturing, generate high-skilled jobs, and promote energy self-reliance.

Strategic Coordination Led by MITRA

The implementation will be strategically supported by MITRA (Maharashtra Industry, Trade and Investment Facilitation Cell). A newly formed working group comprising representatives from Mahagenco, Rosatom Energy Projects, and other stakeholders will steer the initiative forward. This group will focus on research and feasibility studies. It will also handle regulatory coordination under the Government of India’s nuclear safety protocols.

Empowering Maharashtra’s Energy Future

The forward-looking initiative not only underscores Maharashtra’s commitment to clean and reliable energy but also places the state at the forefront of advanced nuclear technology. As reported by devdiscourse.com, by partnering with a global leader like ROSATOM, Maharashtra is making a bold move toward energy diversification, technological leadership, and sustainable development.
