The Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals today organized a one-day “Manthan Shivir” in New Delhi, bringing together key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for the long-term development of India’s chemical and petrochemical sector. Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, chaired the event and led discussions aimed at shaping a resilient and forward-looking industry.
Reinforcing Commitment to Sustainable Growth
While recognizing ongoing challenges, the Union Minister expressed strong confidence in India’s potential to build a self-reliant and sustainable chemical industry. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to creating a robust industrial ecosystem capable of adapting to evolving global dynamics.
Sectoral Overview and Economic Significance
Ms. Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary, Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, highlighted the strategic role of the chemical sector in India’s economy. She noted that the industry contributes 1.4% to the national GDP and nearly 9% to gross value addition in manufacturing. While infrastructure development has gained momentum, she emphasized the need for coordinated policy support to address global uncertainties and align with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Key Themes and Inclusive Deliberations
As reported by pib.gov.in, the day-long discussions focused on six key thematic areas: Infrastructure Development; Sustainability, Recycling & Circular Economy; Trade Remedial Measures; Boosting Manufacturing Towards Viksit Bharat; Skilled Workforce & Training; and Road Map for a Future-Ready Plastic Industry.
Expert groups contributed valuable insights during the event. These included representatives from various Ministries and Departments such as Revenue, DPIIT, Pharmaceuticals, Skill Development, Science & Technology, Textiles, MSME, MoEFCC, and NITI Aayog. Institutions like the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Central Pollution Control Board contributed significantly to the discussions. The Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology also played a key role.
