MECON has called for proposals from interested entities to undertake pilot projects focused on hydrogen injection in both sponge iron plants and blast furnaces, as part of an initiative to advance decarbonisation and sustainability, as informed by the ministry of steel.
The company is soliciting proposals from central public sector enterprises, state-owned entities, private companies, research institutions, and manufacturers of equipment design to submit their schemes for hydrogen injection in direct reduced iron plants and blast furnaces. The initiative aims to support environmental sustainability efforts within the industry.
As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, direct reduced iron, also known as sponge iron, is produced by directly reducing iron ore (which can be in the form of lumps, pellets, or fines) to iron. In contrast, blast furnaces utilize iron ore and coking coal to produce hot metal.
