The board of directors of National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) has approved the formation of a joint venture to establish the Namrup-IV Fertilizer Plant in Namrup, Assam. The board made the decision during a meeting on April 18, 2025. It reflects NFL’s intent to expand its presence in the Northeast and boost urea production capacity to meet India’s rising agricultural demands.
Joint Venture Company to Drive Execution
The upcoming Joint Venture Company (JVC) will be created in collaboration with nominated entities, whose names are yet to be disclosed. NFL will acquire an 18% equity stake in the venture, with an estimated investment of ₹572.45 crore. The project will proceed after securing necessary regulatory approvals. These approvals will come from the Department of Fertilizers (DoF) under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
Namrup-IV: A Modern Fertilizer Complex
The project envisions the Namrup-IV plant as a state-of-the-art ammonia-urea production facility. According to the current timeline, the team expects to achieve mechanical completion and commissioning of the plant within 48 months from the zero date. This will mark a significant advancement in India’s fertilizer manufacturing infrastructure.
Strengthening Self-Reliance in Agriculture
As reported by projectstoday.com, the initiative aligns with the government’s broader goals. These include enhancing domestic fertilizer production, reducing import dependence, and strengthening the agricultural supply chain. The initiative particularly focuses on the underdeveloped but resource-rich North Eastern region.
