National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) opened a research and development (R&D) centre in Patancheru, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, aimed at advancing innovation in mineral processing and sustainable steel technology. Spanning eight acres and with an investment of ₹50 crore, the state-of-the-art facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure.
It specializes in mineralogical characterization, elemental analysis, bulk materials handling and storage, mineral processing, and coal and coke characterization. The centre will act as a focal point for collaborations with academic institutions and industry experts, positioning itself as a pivotal entity in the sector.
The R&D centre features advanced laboratories housing sophisticated instruments such as an automated mineral analyser and automated fusion bead-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser. The instruments ensure accurate and efficient characterization of various minerals.
The facility includes a dedicated area for pelletisation studies, crucial for gathering essential data for future commercial pellet plants. The initiative aims to bolster NMDC’s internal capabilities while providing valuable insights into mineral processing and pellet production for the wider sector.
A standout feature of the R&D centre is its hydrogen reduction facility, integrated with a microwave assisted heating furnace. This innovative setup is pivotal in developing green steel-making technologies, supporting global initiatives to curtail carbon emissions and advocate sustainable practices in the steel industry.
As reported by msn.com, NMDC is confident that the R&D centre will serve as a catalyst for industry players, both corporate and public, enabling significant advancements in maximizing mineral recovery and ensuring mineral security for India.
