Dr. R. Chidambaram, a pioneering nuclear physicist and one of India’s most distinguished scientists, passed away in Mumbai. He was 88.
Known for his pivotal role in India’s atomic programs, Dr. Chidambaram’s contributions were instrumental in the country’s nuclear explosions at Pokhran in 1974 and 1998, which cemented India’s status as a nuclear power.
Key Roles in Advancing India’s Nuclear Capabilities
Dr. Chidambaram served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Later, he held the position of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India from 2001 to 2018.
He held other prominent positions during his illustrious career. These included Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre from 1990 to 1993, and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy from 1993 to 2000.
He chaired the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 1994 to 1995. He also contributed as a member of the IAEA’s Commission of Eminent Persons.

Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy stated, “Dr. Chidambaram was a doyen of science and technology whose contributions furthered India’s nuclear prowess and strategic self-reliance. His loss is an irreparable one for the scientific community and the nation”.

Throughout his career, Dr. Chidambaram received numerous accolades. Among them was the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, awarded for his ground-breaking work in nuclear science and technology.
His efforts not only strengthened India’s scientific foundation, but also ensured the nation’s strategic autonomy in the global arena.
