Petrobras began selling the sulfur produced in its refineries starting this Thursday (01/02). The commercialization of the product was granted to Petrobras Biocombustível (Pbio), a 100% Petrobras subsidiary, currently responsible for the production and commercialization of biodiesel. With the change, the company will hold the proceeds from the sale of 100% of the sulfur produced by Petrobras refineries, which corresponds to 9% of what is consumed annually in the country, the total of which is mostly made up of imported products.

Observing a series of synergies and opportunities, the start of the operation was marked by the first shipment of sulfur sold by Pbio, which left this Thursday afternoon from the Duque de Caxias Refinery (REDUC), which already has a project to replace sales of solid sulfur to liquid, in line with market opportunities.

Sulfur is an important raw material for the refined chemical industry, serving large players in various sectors, such as fertilizers, cellulose and paper, rubber, hygiene and cleaning products, as well as the food industry, among others in the so-called “Premium Market”. The exclusivity will also allow Pbio to add value to the products to be sold, promoting the change from solid to liquid sulfur or producing tableted sulfur, for example, increasing the company’s profit margin. Previously, the sulfur produced in Petrobras refineries was sold by Vibra.

Sales Sector Manager, Deivis Araújo commented, “For the year 2024, we forecast a total production of 180 thousand tons of sulfur in our units. All this production has already been negotiated and this will represent around R$36 million in profit for the company in the period, and best of all, optimizing the operation in our refineries, without compromising the removal of sulfur from the yards”.
