In a major step toward sustainable innovation, Praj Industries has announced a strategic partnership with thyssenkrupp Uhde’s polymer technology division, Uhde Inventa-Fischer GmbH (UIF). The collaboration aims to revolutionize the production of Polylactic Acid (PLA)—a biodegradable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastics.

Combining Proven Technologies

The partnership brings together Praj’s cutting-edge PLANE™RA technology and UIF’s well-established PLAneo® process. Together, these technologies will offer an integrated, end-to-end solution for PLA production—from raw feedstock to finished polymer.

Driving Innovation with Complementary Expertise

As per the LinkedIn post of Praj Industries, this collaboration capitalizes on the synergy between Praj’s industrial biotechnology capabilities and UIF’s deep chemical engineering knowledge. As a result, the joint offering will support cost-effective and sustainable production of both lactic acid and PLA.

Versatile Applications and Scalable Feedstock Solutions

The advanced process is adaptable to both first- and second-generation feedstocks, including non-food biomass. It holds potential for wide-ranging applications across packaging, textiles, hygiene products, and more, helping industries reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics.

Supported by Strong R&D Infrastructure

Further strengthening this initiative is Praj’s Demonstration Facility for Biopolymers and its Centre of Excellence & Innovation in collaboration with ICT Mumbai. These facilities will support the scale-up and commercialization of PLA solutions.

A Step Forward for the Circular Bioeconomy

With this partnership, Praj and thyssenkrupp Uhde are taking a decisive step toward accelerating the transition to a circular bioeconomy. By providing sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, they aim to help industries reduce their environmental footprint and embrace eco-friendly material solutions.
