A coalition of public sector enterprises, led by Coal India Ltd, has been tasked with exploring coal gasification as an energy alternative. This endeavour will incorporate various business frameworks, such as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model, to be implemented through a competitive tendering process.

Coal India, in collaboration with its partners, is directing its efforts towards surface coal gasification initiatives, which can be conducted within existing mines without necessitating new block allocations. The initiative falls under the purview of the ministry of coal, ensuring streamlined asset management and averting potential conflicts with the ministry of petroleum and natural gas.

The union Cabinet has sanctioned a scheme aimed at promoting coal/lignite gasification projects, allocating ₹8,500 crore to incentivize such ventures across different categories. The scheme includes specific provisions catering to government PSUs, private sector entities, and demonstration projects, thereby fostering innovation and investment in coal gasification.

As reported by Unique News, the consortium of public sector enterprises, under the guidance of Coal India Ltd, is receptive to collaborating with stakeholders and businesses to materialize coal gasification projects. This aligns with the government’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable development.
