QatarEnergy has announced the ground-breaking of the world’s largest blue ammonia plant in Mesaieed Industrial City, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Doha.
The event marks a significant milestone in Qatar’s efforts to expand its clean energy portfolio.
Key Features of the Facility
The plant will feature an ammonia production unit with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons.
Additionally, it will include a unit dedicated to carbon dioxide injection and storage, capable of handling 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year.
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of QatarEnergy, highlighted the plant’s advanced features.
Integration with Renewable Energy
Al-Kaabi said, “The solar power plant currently under construction in Mesaieed Industrial City will power this facility with more than 35 megawatts of electricity.”
He emphasized that this integration with renewable energy sources ensures the project’s classification as a blue ammonia facility.
Significant Investment in Clean Energy
The total investment of 4.4 billion Qatari riyals ($1.2 billion) will develop the plant. It will be a collaboration between QatarEnergy and Qatar Fertiliser Company.
The partnership underscores Qatar’s commitment to sustainable energy projects.
Strategic Location and Timeline
The new plant will situate in Mesaieed Industrial City. This hub boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure and hosts one of the Middle East’s largest petrochemical export ports.
Report.az reported that production is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2026. This will position Qatar as a leader in clean energy innovation.
