Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has announced that Sanjay Khanna has assumed additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) following the retirement of G. Krishnakumar on April 30. Khanna, who currently serves as Director (Refineries), brings decades of experience and leadership in refining operations to the top role.
Seasoned Leader with Operational Expertise
Khanna has previously led BPCL’s Kochi and Mumbai refineries, where he oversaw key modernization and expansion projects. According to a company statement, he has played a pivotal role in setting up new process units at BPCL’s refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, and Numaligarh.
During his tenure as Executive Director of Kochi Refinery, Khanna was instrumental in commissioning BPCL’s first niche petrochemical project—the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project—which marked a major step in the company’s diversification into value-added chemicals.
Taking the Helm Amid Major Expansion Plans
Khanna takes over BPCL’s leadership at a strategic juncture, as the company is advancing a series of large-scale projects. Most notably, BPCL is planning a refinery-cum-petrochemical complex in Andhra Pradesh with an estimated capital expenditure of ₹95,000 crore. Once operational, this new facility will boost BPCL’s total refining capacity to around 50 million tonnes per annum and strengthen its position in India’s refining sector.
Ongoing Projects Across India
In parallel, BPCL is also expanding its existing refineries at Bina (Madhya Pradesh) and Kochi (Kerala) to support growing demand and enhance product flexibility. Currently, India’s total refining capacity stands at 250 million tonnes per annum, with BPCL contributing 35 million tonnes to that capacity.
Driving Growth in India’s Energy Landscape
As reported by livemint.com, as CMD, Sanjay Khanna is expected to steer BPCL through its next phase of growth, focusing on refining expansion, petrochemical integration, and strategic investments to meet India’s evolving energy needs.
