Gas is gradually becoming the preferred fuel in India, with public sector organizations establishing small-scale liquefied natural gas (SSLNG) units, facilitating a smoother transition.
Earlier this year, GAIL (India) announced such a project, and recently, ONGC and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) teamed up to develop another unit. The technology aims to connect isolated sources and consumers not yet linked to the natural gas pipeline network, offering a cost-effective solution.
In March, GAIL revealed its plan to set up India’s first SSLNG unit at its Vijaipur LPG plant in Madhya Pradesh. In June, ONGC and IOCL entered a strategic partnership to create an LNG plant near ONGC’s Hatta gas field.
As reported by businessline, the non-binding agreement for a technology demonstration of an SSLNG plant at Hatta, if successful, could lead to similar projects by the oil companies in other areas. The gas production will determine the LNG quantity, with the initial plant capacity planned for 32-35 tons and 45,000 SCMD of gas.
