India’s largest energy storage endeavour has been successfully commissioned, featuring a 40 MW/120 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) interlinked with a 152 MWh solar photovoltaic plant situated in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. The project’s commissioning was overseen by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), operating under the umbrella of the union ministry of new and renewable energy. Tata Power undertook the responsibilities of engineering, procurement, and construction for the initiative, with partial funding provided by the World Bank.

As reported by Emerging Technology News, designed to store and distribute power to Chhattisgarh, the BESS contributes to fulfilling peak energy demands through environmentally sustainable means, aligning with the state’s commitments to procuring renewable energy. The utilization of bifacial modules in the project, enhances energy generation by reflecting ground light, in contrast to monofacial modules, which solely rely on direct sunlight for electricity production.
