Tecnimont Private Limited (TCMPL), the Indian subsidiary of TECNIMONT, has partnered with Paradeep Municipality and the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) to launch a one-ton biogas plant in Paradeep Municipality, Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha.

Ceremony Marks the Beginning

The project’s ground-breaking ceremony took place in the presence of key dignitaries, including Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister of State for Industries, Skill Development, and Technical Education in the government of Odisha, Basanta Biswal, Chairman of Paradeep Municipality, and Alessandro Bernini, CEO of the MAIRE group. Other government officials and NITK representatives also attended the event.

A Sustainable Initiative Under Corporate Social Responsibility

TCMPL is executing this project as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives through a tripartite agreement with Paradeep Municipality, the District Administration of Jagatsinghpur, and NITK.

The plant will use food and vegetable waste to generate biogas for cooking, creating a closed-loop waste-to-resource system.

The facility is expected to become operational within twelve months, directly benefiting local communities.

Commitment to Circular Economy and Environmental Sustainability

Milind Baride, India Region Vice-President of MAIRE Group stated, “This facility reflects our strong commitment to circularity, social responsibility, and economic sustainability. TCMPL aims to balance environmental stewardship with social empowerment, providing a scalable model for future renewable energy projects”.

Sampad Chandra Swain emphasized the plant’s role in waste management and energy sustainability. He added, “By recycling municipal food waste, this plant will significantly reduce landfill burden. Segregated waste collected from the municipal jurisdiction will be converted into compressed biogas and supplied to the community kitchen, fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem”.

Strengthening Local Economy and Green Employment

Basant Kumar Biswal, Chairman of Paradeep Municipality said, “This initiative is a testament to the relentless efforts of Paradeep Municipality officials. It not only promotes the circular economy but also creates green energy employment opportunities in Paradeep”.

Education and Research Opportunities for Students

The project builds on a successful pilot biogas plant at the NITK campus, which has provided hands-on training for students. By scaling up this model in Paradeep, NITK aims to offer practical learning experiences while advancing research in waste management and renewable energy.

Prof. B. Ravi, Director of NITK commented, “With TCMPL’s support, we operate a 500 kg biogas plant on our Surathkal campus. Expanding this experience to Paradeep aligns with Odisha’s green energy objectives. We hope this initiative will inspire students, entrepreneurs, and corporations to explore renewable energy solutions”.

He also extended his gratitude to Prof. Vasudeva Madav, the project coordinator for the MAIRE Centre for Research in Waste Recycling and Circular Economy. He also thanked NITK alumni for their contributions to the project.

Looking Ahead

With this initiative, TCMPL, Paradeep Municipality, and NITK are setting a precedent for sustainable waste management. They are also promoting the adoption of renewable energy.

As per the press release, the project showcases collaboration among industry, academia, and local governance. Together, they aim to create impactful, eco-friendly solutions.
