VA TECH WABAG (WABAG) has won a €78 million (Rs 700 crore) Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) contract from Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) in Zambia. This marks WABAG’s first venture in Zambia, further strengthening its footprint in Africa’s water solutions market. The project is funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) of Germany.
Building Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plants
As part of the contract, WABAG will design and build two state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants in Ngwerere and Chunga, with capacities of 54 million liters per day (MLD) and 19 MLD, respectively. These facilities will leverage renewable energy sources, including biogas and solar power, to ensure sustainable operations.
Supporting Operations for Seamless Performance
After completing construction, VA TECH WABAG will manage the operations of both plants for 24 months. This step aims to guarantee optimal performance and smooth integration into the local sanitation infrastructure.
Driving Zambia’s Sanitation Goals
As reported by manufacturingtodayindia, this project aligns with the Zambian government’s efforts to enhance its water and sanitation infrastructure. By introducing advanced technologies, the initiative promises to significantly improve sanitation facilities and benefit communities across the region.
