Hindustan Zinc Targets Seventy Percent Renewable Energy Transition by 2027

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) has set an ambitious goal to achieve over seventy percent of its total power requirements from renewable energy sources by 2027.

The effort is part of the company’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

Significant Energy Savings in FY24

In FY24, HZL successfully conserved more than 0.8 million Gigajoule (GJ) of energy.

The remarkable achievement is equivalent to providing electricity to approximately 70,000 homes for an entire year.

The company accomplished this through substantial reinvestments, upgrading existing infrastructure, and transitioning from conventional fuels to cleaner alternatives like piped natural gas.

Reduced Emissions with Higher Production Volumes

By reducing its reliance on traditional energy sources, HZL lowered its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 14% compared to 2020 levels, all while increasing production volumes.

Driving Innovation in Energy Efficiency

HZL has implemented several innovative projects to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.

These include:

  • Revamping turbines at its captive power plants.
  • Enhancing cellhouse efficiencies to optimise production.
  • Installing variable frequency drives to improve energy utilisation.
  • Transitioning to piped natural gas as a cleaner alternative to high-speed diesel.

These initiatives have resulted in significant cost savings on energy. They have also contributed to reduced carbon emissions across the company’s operations.

Leading the Way in Sustainability

Chairperson Priya Agarwal Hebbar emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating that HZL is progressing steadily on its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap.

The company aims to develop up to 530 MW of renewable power supply as part of its mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

Hindustan Zinc is also the first Indian company in the metals and mining sector to secure validated Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) targets.

The targets are aligned with the global 1.5°C warming threshold.

Recognised for Sustainability Excellence

The company’s product portfolio is Environment Product Declaration (EPD) verified, providing transparent data on environmental footprints.

HZL has received notable recognition for its sustainability efforts. This includes the Leadership Band (A-) designation by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The recognition is for its exemplary performance in water security and climate change mitigation.

As reported by manufacturingtodayindia.com, HZL remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and renewable energy. The company continues to set benchmarks in the metals and mining industry.
